Volleyball Set To Play Mercer On The Road, Furman At Home To Continue SoCon Play

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University women’s volleyball team will take on Mercer in their final outing of a five-match road swing on Wednesday, before returning to the Pete Hanna Center to face off against Furman Friday, Oct. 15.
Redshirt sophomore, Kenya McQuirter, has been a bright spot for the Dogs having posted double-digit kills in every Southern Conference match this season. She recorded a total of 42 kills last week a mark that earned her SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The Bulldogs enter this week’s competition slate looking to break a four-match losing streak against tough Southern Conference opponents. Samford will take on their rivals from the next state over, the Mercer Bears in midweek action, before returning to the Pete Hanna Center on Friday.

  • Mercer
    • The Bulldogs and Bears will face off for the first time since Samford topped Mercer in the 2020 SoCon Championship match in dominant 3-0 fashion. All-in-all Samford holds a 18-5 margin over the Bears, with four of the five losses coming on the road. The teams split the regular season matchups last season with Samford beating Mercer in the SoCon opener 3-0, before falling to the Bears the following day 3-1.
  • Furman
    • Samford holds a commanding 18-9 lead over the Furman Paladins and are currently riding an eight-match winning streak in the series dating back to September 21, 2018. The Bulldogs won both matchups in the spring season which was moved due to the COVID-19 pandemic with the first match being a 3-0 sweep, while the Dogs needed five sets to top the Paladins in the second match.


  • Kenya McQuirter is the reigning SoCon Offensive Player of the Week having posted 20+ kills in both matches last weekend. McQuirter is riding a six-match streak of double-digit kills including a new career high 22 kills set in Samford’s four-set loss to ETSU.
  • Kate Morgan is coming off a career high in digs against Chattanooga racking up 26 on the night in a heartbreaking five-set loss for the Bulldogs. Morgan has posted double-digit digs in her last 11 matches.
  • Kate Wonus had a breakout match against Chattanooga recording a career high 13 kills. Wonus has been a mainstay middle blocker in the Bulldog starting lineup this season recording 90 kills and six service aces.
  • In a weekend full of career highs, Kayla Keshock returned to the court in dramatic fashion to set the Bulldog offense. Keshock recorded a career high 56 assists against ETSU and 50 assists against the Mocs of Chattanooga. On the season, Keshock has amassed 529 assists, 23 kills, and 16 service aces. 


  • The Bears enter the weekend with a 9-8 recored on the season and 5-1 in SoCon play, ranking second in the conference. Mercer is led by redshirt junior outside hitter, Taylor Lynch, who leads the team with 161 kills on the season, while graduate student, Megan Smith, holds down the defense recording 266 digs in 2021.
  • Furman comes to the Pete Hanna Center sitting at the bottom of the table in SoCon play. The Paladins are 6-10 on the season and 1-5 in conference play entering the week. Furman is led offensively by freshman outside hitter Bella Tolone, who has recorded 183 kills on the season including 19 against the conference leading UNCG Spartans.
