Bulldogs Open SoCon Play With 3-0 Win Over Wofford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.

 – The Samford volleyball team opened Southern Conference play with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-21) victory over the Wofford Terriers Friday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 2-10 overall and 1-0 in SoCon play. Wofford falls to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  
Samford started the first set off strong, racing out to a 4-0 lead on a kill by Sarah Hayes Farley. The Bulldogs built a 9-3 lead, but Wofford answered with an 8-1 run to take an 11-10 lead off a kill by Sarah Barham. The Bulldogs came back to take an 18-14 lead on block assists by Lauren Deaton and Kate Wonus. Samford built its lead to 21-15 after a service ace by Deaton. The Bulldogs took the first set by a score of 25-19, with the winning point coming off a Wofford attack error off an Emily Naubert serve.
 
In the second set, after Wofford jumped out to a 3-0 lead, Samford fought back to take an 11-6 advantage on block assists by Kenya McQuirter and Wonus. The Bulldogs built a 17-9 lead following a kill by Briana Holmes. Wofford could get no closer than five points the rest of the set and Samford took the set by a score of 25-18.
 
In the third set, the teams traded points early on with neither team able to take more than a two-point lead until Samford grabbed a 9-6 lead off a kill by Deaton. Wofford fought back to take a 17-16 lead on a kill by Bella Zeman. With Wofford leading, 19-18, Samford went on a 6-2 run to close the set and take the 25-21 win.

FROM THE BOX SCORE

  • McQuirter led Samford with 13 kills in the win, while Deaton followed with nine.
  • Kate Morgan had 13 digs for the Bulldogs.
  • Kayla Keshock finished with 31 assists.
  • For Wofford, Meghan Yaffa had seven kills.

 
UP NEXT

  • The Bulldogs will play host to The Citadel Saturday evening. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
