Alabama State finishes off SWAC Cluster with sweep over Alcorn State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | Alabama State finished off the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Cluster on Monday morning with a 3-0 sweep over Alcorn State in the Al Lawson Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Sophomore Jada Rhodes (Tallahassee, Fla.) started off scoring for the Hornets in the opening set with a kill, assisted by Madison Beasley (Gilbert, Ariz.) to gain an early 2-0 lead after an attack error from the Braves.
  • The two teams traded scores over the next few rallies, as the score was tied nine times along with having four lead changes in the set. Neither team earned a multiple point lead again until kills from Kalysia Bates (Phenix City, Ala.) and Lauren Hughes (Lancaster, Texas) gave Alabama State a 14-12 lead.
  • After a timeout, the Hornets controlled the remainder of the set with a 11-6 stretch to extend their lead and took the set after a service ace from Rekiyah Spears (Germantown, Tenn.) and two kills from Bates to take the set by a score of 25-18.
  • The second set was also a tight contest to start before block assists from Maya Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) and Mahogany Vinson (Richton Park, Ill.) sparked a run to force an Alcorn State timeout with the Hornets leading 13-9.
  • The Braves reduced the deficit slightly, however Alabama State continued their hold on the set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match after winning the second.
  • Alabama State took an early lead in the third, however found themselves in a battle with the score tied at 11-11 and trailed 17-16 before the first called timeout of the set.
  • The two teams continued to battle over the next few rallies and the Hornets went on to retake the lead at 23-22 to force the second called timeout from Alcorn State. The teams tied three more times over the remainder, however two final errors finished off the sweep over the Braves.

MATCH NOTES

  • With the win on Monday, Alabama State is now 17-2 under Coach Penny-Lucas White since her hiring in 2011, including winning 13 of the last 14 matches.
  • Alexis Ratliff (Atlanta, Ga.) continued her strong stretch of play over the weekend, recording 12 kills on the day, her third straight double-digit kill performance and fourth out of five games.
  • Rhodes ended just two digs shy of a double-double, logging 10 kills and eight digs against the Braves while also adding two blocks and an ace. Bates added seven kills, three blocks and three digs on the day.
  • Logan Horne (Montgomery, Ala.) led Alabama State again defensively, recording 11 digs as well as adding two assists and an ace. The sophomore logged 39 total digs in three games at the cluster.
  • Setter Madison Beasley earned a team-high 20 assists for a .488 set percentage clip along with four assists against Alcorn.

UP NEXT
Alabama State (6-14) will return to Florida this weekend as they take on conference newcomers in Bethune-Cookman on Friday, October 15 scheduled for 6 pm, along with a return to the Al Lawson Center to take on Florida A&M on Sunday, October 17.
