UAB Volleyball Defeats UTSA

SAN ANTONIO- The UAB volleyball team was victorious today after coming out on top in an exciting four sets of volleyball against UTSA at the Convocation Center.
Alex Kells recorded team-high 17 kills, Tatijana Fucka tallied a season-high eight blocks, while Kiana Mack added seven. Erin Powers racked up 26 digs. Lidya Canturk posted 45 assists.
UAB (8-8, 3-1) started strong with a well-rounded performance in the first set, winning 25-20. The Roadrunners (6-12, 3-3) won a wild second set 31-29, a set that was tied 16 times and had eight lead changes, with UTSA eventually coming out on top. The third set was close throughout and ended when UAB pulled away late to clinch the set, 25-21. In the fourth and final set, UAB started with a 4-0 scoring run and kept up the points, maintained their momentum, and eventually won the set 25-15, and the match 3-1.
“Today was such a great team win.” Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. “We had to make a late adjustment to start the match, and Lexy Thomas really answered the call. We don’t win that match without her contribution. We really challenged our team this morning to be better defensively, and they responded with a great effort with our 71 digs and 19 blocks. Erin Powers anchored the floor defense with 26 digs which is just 10 off our team number from Friday night. After the last two weekends on the road, we are looking forward to playing at home.”
Next weekend, the Blazers will host North Texas in Bartow Arena for two matches, on Friday at 6 P.M. and Saturday at 1 P.M.
