NORFOLK- UAB Volleyball came out on top today in four sets vs Old Dominion. Fernanda Maida scored 27 kills, and Alex Kells recorded 14. The team collectively recorded nine service aces.
The Blazers (7-7) won a back and forth first set, 25-22. The Monarchs (9-8) won the second set 25-18, led by .417% hitting average. In the third set, UAB once again used a strong offensive performance to win a close set, 26-24. In the fourth and final set, the Blazers were spurred to victory by Fernanda Maida’s nine kills to win the set 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
Coach Betsy Freeburg said, “This was a big time win for UAB today, and we got better this weekend. We showed that we can be resilient, and we can improve from night to night. We really challenged our passers after last night’s loss, and they came out and gave us opportunities to be in system and run our offense. This was a total program win having a lot of different contributors in important times. Tatijana Fucka came off the bench and provided some offense in the middle, and Brianna Muller scored some points behind the service line in set 4. We are so grateful to Old Dominion for hosting these matches and are looking forward to continuing CUSA play next weekend at UTSA.”
Next weekend, UAB travels to San Antonio Texas to take on UTSA. The first match will be October 8 at 12 p.m., and the second will be October 9 at 12 p.m.
