Women’s Soccer Takes a 2-0 Defeat from DSU in GSC Play

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Alabama women’s soccer team took a 2-0 defeat from Delta State in a Gulf South Conference matchup Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers dropped to 3-2-1 overall and are now 1-1-0 in GSC play. The Statesmen improved to 4-5 and are 4-1 in the conference. 

It was a scoreless match in the first half then Delta State scored two goals in the second half to gain a 2-0 lead over the Tigers. 

DSU midfielders Rainey Niles and Lavinia Horning scored for the Statesmen. Niles’ goal came in the 57th minute. Horning’s goal followed in the 63rd minute. 

UWA battled until the end but could not manage to find the back of the net. DSU outshot UWA, 8-6, and won the shot on goal battle, 5-3. Sarah Coco led the Tigers with two shots and one shot on goal. 

The physical contest featured 24 fouls, 15 called on DSU while 9 were called on UWA.

Between the posts for the Tigers was Tabitha Weldon. She recorded three saves as she faced eight shots in the 90 minutes of action. 

The Statesmen’s goalie Amanda Hilliard recorded three saves and kept the clean sheet.

The Tigers continue the two-match weekend series Sunday, Oct. 3 against Mississippi College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
