SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford graduate quarterback Liam Welch was named the Southern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Month when the league released its monthly awards Friday afternoon.
Welch averaged 380.5 passing yards per game in Samford’s four games in the month of September. He completed 67.9 percent of his passes (138-of-203) in that period as well. His best game came against 15th-ranked ETSU when he set Samford and SoCon records for passing yards (582), total yards (655), completions (56) and attempts (73).
In the season opening win over Tennessee Tech, Welch passed for 370 yards and four touchdowns. Welch also passed for 352 yards and a touchdown in the team’s SoCon victory at Western Carolina.
For the season, Welch leads the SoCon and ranks third nationally in both passing yards per game (380.2 ypg.) and total offense per game (412.0 ypg.). His nine touchdown passes also lead the SoCon and are tied for 14th nationally.
