UAB Falls to Old Dominion

UAB volleyball lost to Old Dominion Friday night in the first of two matches. In a hard fought five sets, the Blazers fell (25-14, 19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 10-15) to the Monarchs at the ODU Volleyball Center in Norfolk.
Fernanda Maida racked up 32 kills and posted a .412 hitting percentage.
Coach Betsy Freeburg said, “Tonight was a hard-fought loss in a tough environment. We had a great clean first set and Old Dominion responded with a huge fight in set two. From there on, we played scrappy volleyball, but we certainly did not play clean volleyball. We will look to build off that effort displayed as we continue working to get crisper and tighten up our execution of the game plan.”
Set one saw UAB (6-7) start fast and score quickly.  The Blazers kept up the scoring to take the set 25-14. Set 2 went in a similar fashion, but Old Dominion (9-6) retook the lead and benefitted from four service aces and five blocks to eventually win the set 25-19. The third set went to the Blazers, led by 10 kills from Fernanda Maida. UAB held off ODU to take the set 25-21. In set four, the Monarchs used six blocks to come out on top in a tightly contested set, 25-23. The fifth and final set went to Old Dominion 15-10, helped along by 3 service aces and four blocks.
The Blazers will get another shot at Old Dominion tomorrow, at 11am CT. “The great opportunity about this back-to-back schedule is we get another chance at Old Dominion tomorrow.” Said Coach Freeburg. “Lexy Thomas had a great night offensively for us and it was great to see her work in practice pay off in the match. Fernanda Maida put up another remarkable kill number with 32.”
