Troy Falls at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – Despite a last-ditch effort by freshman Erin Bloomfield, Troy fell on the road to Georgia Southern, 2-1, Thursday night at Eagle Field.
The Trojans (4-6-1, 1-3-0 Sun Belt) came out the gate firing on all cylinders, recording five shots and a pair of saves through the first quarter of action.
Freshman Ella Owen fired off a pair of shots on goal for the Trojans in the fourth and 28th minute but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Georgia Southern’s (7-4-2, 2-1-1 Sun Belt) best look of the opening 25 minutes of action came at the 22nd-minute mark when Faith Phillips broke out of the midfield and was one-on-one with goalkeeper Lindsey LaRoche. LaRoche made a diving save, kicking the ball down the end line for Johanna Biermann to clear.
However, it was the Eagles that struck first in the 39th-minute after a foul committed by Jordan Stack resulted in a penalty kick.
Just three minutes into the second half, Lisa Blankestein kick started the Trojan offense firing off her third shot attempt of the season. Gabrielle Chartier followed five minutes later with a shot attempt that fell wide left.
However, Georgia Southern was able to take a 2-0 lead in the 62nd-minute after a handball inside the box resulted in another penalty kick for the Eagles.
Taytum Terrell looked to spark some offensive momentum in the 75th-minute with a beautiful strike that caught the top of the crossbar but was not able to score on the rebounding effort.
In the 88th-minute, Erin Bloomfield did what she does best and came off the bench to kick start the Trojan offense. Bloomfield found her sixth goal of the season from a corner kick.
With the momentum in our favor, Troy drove down the field in the final minute of action and forced another corner kick but could not rip off a shot in time.

  • After starting five consecutive matches, Erin Bloomfield came off the bench for the second straight contest. All six of Bloomfield’s goals have been when she was not in the starting lineup.
  • Gabrielle Chartier extends her match-started streak to 11 matches.
  • Taytum Terrell found her third assist on the season after taking the first touch off the corner kick. Terrell leads the squad in assists this season.
