COLUMBUS, Miss. – Powered by a hat trick from Sophie Smith the BSC women’s soccer team defeated Mississippi University for Women 6-1. After netting two goals in the first half the Panthers doubled that in the second half scoring four.
The scoring got started in the 16th minute when Sophie Smith scored to get the momentum on the Panthers side. Smith then netted her second goal of the game in 26th minute to put BSC up 2-0 midway through the first half.
The Panthers carried that 2-0 lead into halftime.
With a 2-0 lead the Panthers did not take their foot off the gas. Seven minutes into the second half BSC was fouled in the box and were awarded a penalty kick. Sophie Smith stepped up to take the PK and successfully converted the attempt. The Panthers went up 3-0 with just under 40 minutes to play. Just over four minutes later Abby Walker scored her seventh goal of the season to push the Birmingham-Southern lead to 4-0.
The Panthers continued to create scoring chances and converted on two of them late in the game. In the 71st minutes Camryn Lampron netted the fifth goal for BSC and Ansley Hicks capped off the BSC goals with the sixth goal in the 83rd minute. MUW was able to net one goal but would get nothing else.
The Panthers went on to win the game 6-1.
