DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Montevallo men’s soccer team took its third consecutive victory this evening, escaping North Georgia 2-1 on the road. With the win the Falcons inherit a 7-1-1 record for the season while North Georgia falls to 4-4.
“This road game at North Georgia with their incredible facilities has always been one of the hardest places to go and get a win,” said head coach Bruce Dietterle. “We had to battle with the turf and the size of the field and we didn’t play our best soccer
but sometimes you gotta win ugly to keep things rolling.”
Montevallo came into the game looking to be aggressive, only taking seven minutes to place a goal in the North Georgia net. Jonathan Guadarrama played a ball for Edin Hernandez to put into the back of the net for Montevallo to take an early 1-0 lead.
Defense was strict between the two teams for the duration of the first half and deep into the second. That was until North Georgia’s Alejandro DeVillena notched a goal off the assist from Gustavo Alencar in the 65th minute to match the Montevallo score.
The Falcons kept their composure and found a goal in the following eight minutes when Edorta Cabieces Sanz found Julio Rojo for the game winning goal in the 73rd minute. UNG had its chances to make another tie up until the final seconds but UM held them off for the non-conference victory.
Montevallo out shot the Nighthawks 16-9 during the match with seven on goal shots compared to North Georgia’s five. The Falcons maintained an edge in corner kicks with seven compared to five from the home team.
UP NEXT: Montevallo will return to Varsity Field for a match up against Spring Hill College, with kick off set for 7:30 pm.
