Samford’s Welch Earns National And SoCon Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford graduate quarterback Liam Welch was named both the National Offensive Player of the Week by Stats Perform and the Southern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, both organizations announced Monday afternoon.
In Saturday’s home game against 15th-ranked ETSU, Welch set Samford and Southern Conference records for passing yards (582), total offense (655), completions (56) and attempts (73).
Against a defense that was allowing just 7.7 points per game coming into the contest, Welch led an offense that produced 48 points and 728 total yards. He threw three touchdown passes from six, 26 and 19 yards out in the game. 
In addition to his passing numbers, Welch also led the Samford running game with 73 yards on 10 carries. He also scored on a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter to put Samford ahead, 41-38.
For the season, Welch leads the SoCon and ranks third nationally in both passing yards per game at 380.2 yards per game and in total offense per game, averaging 412.0 yards per contest.
Samford will go back on the road to play at Mercer this Saturday, Oct. 2. The game is set for a 5 p.m. (CT) start from Macon, Ga. The contest can be seen live on ESPN+.
