UAB Takes down Southern Miss 3-1

BIRMINGHAM- The Blazers were winners again Saturday afternoon, triumphing over Southern Miss, 3-1. The Blazers turned in another powerful offensive performance, with Alex Kells and Fernanda Maida each scoring 18 kills.

The Blazers won a back and forth first set 25-19, one that ended with a pair of Southern Miss attacking errors. The Golden Eagles won a wild second set 30-28, coming out on top in a scoring frenzy that saw four lead changes after the scoring exceeded 25. The third set went to UAB 25-23, helped by 10 Southern Miss errors. When the fourth set was tied at 19, the Blazers quickly scored five points in a row, eventually scoring the last point to win the set and match, 25-21.

UAB (6-6, 2-0), recorded 10 service aces as a team.  Chloe Rodriguez tallied 5 blocks, and Lidya Canturk recorded 30 assists. Erin Powers recorded 23 digs, several of which were clutch defensive plays that allowed the Blazers to keep their scoring rhythm throughout the match.

“It is so hard to have two wins against a quality opponent in less than 24 hours.” Coach Betsy Freeburg said. “Today’s match was a battle, and we are really proud of the effort the team put forth. Erin Powers was great behind the service line and anchored our defensive effort. We talk about digs being contagious and it showed today. Alex Kells put together a great defensive push late in set 4 that led to transition kills when we really needed it. We look forward to resting the remainder of the weekend and then getting back in the gym and getting better on Monday.”

UAB travels to Norfolk, Virginia next weekend to play Old Dominion in a pair of matches. The first match is on October 1st at 6 p.m., and the second will be played October 2nd at 11 a.m.

Due to the recent surge of COVID-19 and updated CDC guidance, UAB will require face masks indoors on campus – regardless of vaccine status – effective Thursday, July 29. Individuals can briefly unmask while eating or drinking.
