Troy Earns First Conference Win Of The Season After Sweep Of UTA

TROY, Ala. – Troy bounced back Saturday night at Trojan Arena sweeping UT Arlington in three sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-19) for their first conference victory of the season.
“It was a gritty game,” head coach Josh Lauer said. “We got stronger as the game went on, and I’m proud of how our team competed. We made plays when we had too. We talked about winning gritty games and we did that tonight. We’re going to be excited to get back in the gym this week and work on some things.”
Troy (8-5) had four players with double-digit kills. Cheyenne Hayes and Julia Brooks led the way with 12 each, followed by Alison Siersma and Halston Hillier, and each had 10. As a team, the Trojans had a .319 hitting percentage. Amara Anderson led all players in the match once again in assists with 31.
Brooke Townsend and Brianna Ford led the Mavericks (2-9) with 11 kills each. Alli Wells led the match in digs with 13 on the night.
First Set: The first set saw slight separation as there were 11 ties and three lead changes. Trading points back forth continued as neither side saw a larger lead than two points.  With the Trojans down 21-19, Siesrma and Hayes recorded back-to-back kills to tie things up. The Mavericks felt the pressure and would register a service error and attack the error to give the Trojans the lead, where Hillier and Brooks made sure the set went the Trojan’s way with two straight kills secure the set 25-23.
Second Set: Troy would look to get out early as they jumped out to a 9-5 lead after a long rally saw Siersma attack from outside the pin and earn a cross-court kill. UT Arlington showed fight and would eventually tie things up at 10 after a kill by Briana Brown. Amara Anderson would switch things up and find the middle of the court for a kill and give the Trojans another lead, but it wouldn’t last long as the match was tied 20-20. After a lengthy review which resulted in going in the Trojan’s favor, the Mavericks didn’t have another rally. They would end on attacking error, giving the Trojans a two-set advantage.
Third set: The Trojans made sure not to see the fourth set as they led the third set. Hillier led the charge with two straight kills giving the Trojans a 7-1 lead. Trojans were still in control at the media timeout as they used Caroline Darracott and Natalie Hummel aces to reach 20 first. Julia Brooks and Amara Anderson teamed up to end the match and give the Trojans their fourth-season sweep.
Up Next: The Trojans will hit the road for the next four matches with their first stop in Arkansas to battle Arkansas St. and Little Rock.
