PANTHERS START TITLE DEFENSE WITH WIN OVER HENDRIX

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern men’s soccer team opened up SAA Conference play with a 2-0 win over Hendrix. After winning the conference tournament title in the 2020-21 season the Panthers started their quest for a repeat.

The game started slow with both teams trading shots and corner kicks but nothing to show for. As the game got deeper into the first half the pace of the game and the scoring chances increased. The Panthers struck first, just before half, in the 37th minute. Bryan Arteaga Cruz crossed the ball into the box and it found the head of Coleman Jennings who netted his conference leading 10th goal of the season.

Birmingham-Southern kept the 1-0 lead as they went into halftime.

The second half picked up where the first half left off. Both teams had many scoring chances but neither team was able to capitalize on them, until the 86th minute. The Panthers were awarded a corner kick. Pirmin Blattmann booted the ball to the near post and that ball found the head of sophomore, defender, Harry Maughan who beat the keeper and sealed the victory for the Panthers.

Birmingham-Southern held on to the 2-0 lead and won the game.
