Falcons Roll to 2-0 GSC Start After Weekend Sweep

LIVINGSTON – Three players had double-digit kills as the Falcons rolled past West Alabama 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. With the win, UM improved to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference, while UWA remained winless at 0-9 and 0-3.

Senior hitter Evelina Teran had a fantastic match, finishing with 20 kills, 10 digs and four blocks to lead UM. Freshman Aliyah Thompson added a season-high 14 kills, while sophomore Macy Martin contributed 13 kills. Freshman setter Colton Thompson tallied a season-high 55 assists, while sophomore libero Casey Hendrixson had 11 digs.

As a team, the Falcons had a hitting percentage of .402 and defensively, they built a purple wall over the net finishing with 15 blocks (7 solo). In addition, UM had eight service aces.

With the exception of one letdown, the Falcons dominated the match. The first set was a breeze as UM blew past the Tigers 25-12. However, UWA tied the match with a 25-22 win in the second set. But, the Falcons regrouped and cruised the rest of the way 25-12 and 25-19.

“We hit very well today,” said head coach Katie O’Brien. “Colton did a nice job setting and had four aces. Blocking was solid and defense kept giving us an opportunity to swing.”

Coach O’Brien said that the team “will rest on Sunday and go back to work on Monday to prepare for next weekend.”

Next Up: The Falcons head north to Huntsville to take on UAH in a rematch of the Gulf South Conference Spring Volleyball Tournament Championship match. Game time is 6 p.m. on Friday evening. Then, UM returns home on Saturday to host Shorter University at 2 p.m. at Trustmark Arena.
