UAB defeats Southern Miss 3-0

BIRMINGHAM- UAB volleyball won its first Conference USA match against Southern Miss, 3-0. Led by a signature performance from Fernanda Maida (20 kills, two service aces), the Blazers came out of Bartow Arena with a victory. “Tonight was a great start to the CUSA season.” Said head coach Betsy Freeburg. “The team really embraced the scouting report and were disciplined defensively throughout the match. We stayed present and patient when things weren’t going our way, and when we had the opportunity to score, we took advantage of it. A lot of different players contributed to this win between Kayla Hardy’s right back defense and Avery Long coming in and passing really well late in set 3.”
The Blazers rode a dominant scoring flurry to take the first set 25-21, won a tightly contested second set 25-23, and finished strong with a 25-15 win in the third set to clinch the match.
UAB benefitted from strong offensive outings from several Blazers. Fernanda Maida tallied 20 kills, with 9 of them coming in the third set. Alex Kells had 10 kills, to go with two service aces. Laney Dale contributed two service aces and 14 assists. Lidya Canturk tallied 24 assists and a kill. Freshman Chloe Rodriguez scored three kills on three attacks.
The Blazers will improve to 5-6, 1-0 on the year.
Tommorow at 2 p.m, UAB will take on the Golden Eagles again in Bartow Arena. “Last season we struggled on the second day of the series, so we are eager to see how much we have grown.” Freeburg said.
