SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford senior running back DeMarcus Ware was named the Southern Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week when the league released its weekly football awards Monday morning.
Ware rushed 26 times for 118 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the Bulldogs to a 42-37 win at Western Carolina in the team’s SoCon opener Saturday. Ware scored the first two touchdowns of the game, the first on a 44-yard run, and the second on a four-yard run to give Samford a 14-0 lead. In the fourth quarter, he scored on another four-yard run to give Samford a 42-31 lead.
For the game, Ware averaged 4.5 yards per carry. The 118-yard total is the second highest in a single game of his career. In addition to his rushing numbers, Ware also caught three passes for 11 yards in the win.
For the season, Ware leads the team in rushing yards with 154, and in rushing touchdowns with five. His 4.1-yards-per-carry average for the season is the highest for anyone with at least 10 carries.
Ware and the Bulldogs will return home this weekend to play host to the ETSU Bucs. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start at Seibert Stadium.
