Trojans Down Bulldogs 3-0 in Finale of Samford Invite

Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University volleyball team fell, 3-0, in the finale of the 2021 Samford Invitational, Sunday at the Pete Hanna Center. The match was the final nonconference contest for the Bulldogs before opening Southern Conference play on Friday, Sept. 24 versus Wofford.    


Defensive intensity marked the opening of the first set, as neither team managed to take control of the frame, splitting the first 12 points, 6-6. With Kayla Keshock on serve, the Bulldogs built a four-point lead, 10-6. Troy won eight of the next 10 points in the match to take a 15-12 lead at the media timeout. Lauren Deaton’s kill off the Trojans’ block ended a streak of five consecutive Troy points. The Bulldogs took the next four points to cut the deficit to, 19-17. The Trojans closed out the first set, 25-20, behind 16 kills. Cheyenne Hayes led Troy with five kills while Kenya McQuirter paced the Bulldogs with four. Lauren Deaton had six digs for SU as well.
Set two started like the first with both teams splitting the first 10 points, 5-5. The Trojans rolled off the next three points behind back-to-back service aces by Hayes. Trailing 11-8, the Bulldogs reeled-off six of the next 10 points to trail, 15-14, at the media timeout. Sarah Hayes Farley’s trio of kills powered the run by the Bulldogs. Troy forced a quick timeout by Samford after back-to-back points from Julia Brooks to take an 18-15 edge. Samford answered right back with four consecutive points on an ace by Andie Salasky, a kill by Deaton and two attack errors by the Trojans. Troy closed out the second set by winning seven of the last nine points to take a commanding 2-0 lead. The Trojans trailed the Bulldogs 12-10 in kills.
A pair of blocks by Keshock and Kenya McQuirter, who also recorded a kill, got the Bulldogs off to a quick 5-2 start in the third set. Troy seized momentum with four consecutive points, including a pair of kills by Jessica Brooks, to tie the frame at 6-6. The Trojans kept the pressure on the Bulldogs building a three-point lead, 11-8, and forcing a timeout by Samford. The Bulldogs clawed back into the match winning six of the next seven points with four coming off blocks to take a 14-12 advantage. Troy and Samford traded the next few points before a service error knotted the set at 19-19. Deaton’s kill briefly put SU up 20-19 before the Trojans scored three-straight to go up 22-20. The Trojans closed out the match with three of the final five points for a 25-22 set final.            


  • McQuirter paced the Bulldogs with nine kills followed by Deaton with eight.
  • Kate Morgan led all players with 15 digs while Kayla Keshock added 27 assists for SU.
  • The Trojans were led by Julia Brooks with 11 kills on 23 attacks while Cheyenne Hayes closed the match with nine kills.
  • Amara Anderson led Troy with 10 digs and 31 assists.   


  • The Bulldogs will open Southern Conference play on Friday, Sept. 24, as Samford hosts Wofford College. First serve is set for 7 PM at the Pete Hanna Center.
