New Orleans, LA – On Tuesday afternoon the 14th ranked Tornadoes Men’s Basketball team traveled to New Orleans to face off against GCAC foe Xavier.

Talladega led wire-to-wire in a game where the nation’s second-best defensive team was on display. The Tornadoes suffocated the Gold Rush offense holding Xavier to 30.5% shooting in a 61-49 victory. Paul Turner scored 14 points while Amir Yusuf controlled the paint with 10 rebounds.

Playing for an outright Conference Championship on Wednesday, the Tornadoes upended Dillard 80-72. GCAC Pre-Season Player of the Year Darryl Baker poured in 33 points while Tony Hutson added 20. Once again Amir Yusuf dominated inside with an 11 point and 10 rebound performance. The Tornadoes showed why they lead the nation in rebounding margin crushing the Bleu Devils on the glass by 15. This game marked the fourth consecutive time Talladega has beat Dillard head-to-head.

“I am extremely proud of our team,” said Head Coach Chris Wright. “To run through the league in the way we did says a lot about the character of these men. We know that toughness wins, and when you look at what we do on the defensive end of the floor as well as the glass, it is no surprise we dominated the league. I also believe that’s why we have a chance to make a deep-run in March.”

“Talladega College is about excellence and this basketball team embodies that,” continued Coach Wright. “To win the GCAC in our final year in the conference is special. To win it with good people that work hard and do things the right way makes it even more significant.”
