Tornadoes Defeat William Woods in Non-Conference Match

Fulton, MO – The Talladega Men’s Basketball team traveled to face William Woods University Monday afternoon. The Tornadoes are coming off a tough loss just the day before, and own a record of 9-2 on the season. William Woods entered play today with a record of 0-1. The Tornadoes were 3-1 when facing AMC opponents this year and looked to improve upon that today.

Talladega got the scoring started in this one as they opened on a 9-0 run. William Woods would try and break down the TC lead responding back with their own 5-0 run early. Talladega would stop their run still holding the lead at 9-5.

The Tornadoes kept the offense coming as they were able to extend their lead to 16-9 with eight minutes remaining in the first half.

William Woods battled another TC run and was able to draw the lead back down to eight, now down 27-19 to Talladega.

The Tornadoes went on to carry a 27-22 lead into the half courtesy of an Amir Yusuf offensive rebound.

In the first half Talladega was led offensively by Darryl Baker who recorded 12 points. Kamron Brice pulled down nine rebounds and Edwin Louis had two assists.

Talladega came out of the half scorching hot and took it to William Woods in a big way. The score was 38-26 in favor of the Tornadoes, before they went on a 5-0 run to claim a 43-28 lead. Markel Williams and Baker both hit big shots in the process.

The Tornadoes would continue to pour on the offense building themselves a 49-38 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game.

William Woods would still have some fight left in them however knotting the game up with Talladega 51-51 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.

The Tornadoes would ultimately claim victory in this one, winning the non-conference matchup by a score of 69-65. With the win Talladega is now 10-2 this season.

“We weren’t very good on this trip,” said Head Coach Chris Wright. “I’m thankful we found a way to go 2-1. We lost our identity over the 21-day break. We will get back and get to work.”

“I’m happy we found a way to win today,” continued Coach Wright. “It’s hard to win in college basketball on the road, especially when its eight on five.”

Baker finished the night with 20 points and five assists. Williams recorded 13 points and Brice finished with eleven rebounds. Yusuf finished with a double-double earning 12 points and ten rebounds.

Throughout the game the Talladega scoring was very spread out, with contributions coming on offense from most everyone on the floor. Even in the rebounding category the stats were very similar. This one was truly a team effort by Talladega.

The Tornadoes will return to action next Monday when they host Rust College for an GCAC Conference match-up.
