Stillman Women Fall on Homecoming

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Stillman College women’s basketball closed the 2020-2021 regular season Feb. 20 with a 71-50 loss to No. 23 Loyola University at home in Birthright Alumni Hall.  


The Tigers pushed back from a five-point deficit in the first quarter to tie the game, 17-17, on a Brittany Washington 3-pointer at the quarter buzzer. Stillman later took a 23-21 lead on an Imani Wimbish-Gay basket midway in the second quarter. A Morgan Collins 3, followed by a Wimbish-Gay 3 later pushed the Stillman lead to six points, 29-23. Loyola scored seven-straight to lead 30-29 at the half.


Collins and Zikira Williams led Stillman in the first half with eight points apiece. Each were held to two points in the second half to finish with 10 total points. 


Loyola opened the second half with a 13-4 run to post a 10-point lead, 44-33. A pair of late third-quarter free throws by Zaria Jenkins and a Victoria Syphoe basket with 15 seconds left cut it to seven, 52-45, to close the third quarter. The Tigers knocked down only two shots in the final 10 minutes.


Stillman shot 33.3% in the second half, while Loyola scored at a 51.7% pace. The Wolfpack pulled away late with a 19-5 fourth quarter. 


Presley Wascom scored 19 to lead Loyola, followed by 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists by Taylor Thomas. Sandra Cannady led all players with 11 rebounds. 


Stillman had 25 total rebounds to Loyola’s 47.


Stillman (4-13, 4-11 SSAC West) and Loyola (17-1, 11-1 SSAC West) will next compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament, Feb. 25-27 in Montgomery, Alabama. Stillman opens the tournament at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25 against Brewton Parker.
