Stillman Wins in OT, Sweeps BMC

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Zikira Williams scored seven points in overtime to lift Stillman College to a 59-55 win over Blue Mountain College Saturday afternoon in Birthright Alumni Hall. Williams finished with 16 points and nine rebounds to lead all players.

Stillman trailed most of the first quarter but used a 15-2 run to take a nine-point lead, 26-17, midway through the second quarter. Blue Mountain cut it to 26-22 Tigers at the half. The final 20 minutes was mostly a one- or two-possession game.

With the shot clock at 2 seconds, Charnita Brooks hit a 3 from the top of the key to tie the game, 42-42, with 3:59 to play. Brooks followed with a go-ahead basket with 3:09 left. She finished with a team-high 14 points.

After Blue Mountain took a 46-44 lead, Victoria Syphoe checked in and was fouled on a 3-point attempt in front of the Tigers’ bench. Syphoe knocked down all three free throws to give Stillman a 47-46 lead with 1:56 to play.

Mackenzie Lane cut to the basket for a go-ahead layup  with 52 seconds left before Syphoe hit 1-of-2 freebies to tie it, 48-48 with 28 seconds left.

Imani Wimbish-Gay forced a turnover with 12 seconds left to help force overtime.

Stillman forced four turnovers in overtime and didn’t turn the ball over once while shooting 62.5 from the floor.

Morgan Collins followed Williams’ lead with 15 points.

Kandice Ricks was second in scoring for BMC with 12 points, while Mallory Russell had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Stillman (4-11, 4-9 SSAC) completes the regular season, four-game sweep of Blue Mountain College. The Tigers will close the regular season at home next week beginning with the University of Mobile on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m., and then a Friday and Saturday series against Loyola University of New Orleans.
