Stillman Falls to No. 23 Loyola, 51-42

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Stillman College gave the 23rd-ranked Loyola Wolfpack a challenge in the second half, but Loyola pulled out a 51-42 win to open the final weekend of the regular season. 

Morgan Collins scored Stillman’s first seven points, followed by a Zikira WIlliams basket off a turnover to open the game with a 9-3 Stillman lead. It was 14-8 before Kennedy Hansberry hit a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game, 14-10, at the end of the first quarter. 

Both teams shot exactly 37.5% in the first 10 minutes of action, with Stillman out-rebounding Loyola, 10-6, but the Tigers struggled in the second frame. Loyola scored 12-straight points before Olivia Mosely scored Stillman’s only bucket of the second quarter to go into halftime trailing, 22-16. The Tigers were 1-of-15 from the field in the quarter. 

However, Stillman came out strong in the third quarter with a 7-0 run to take the lead on a Collins basket. De’Asia Marsh later knocked down a 3 with 11:39 remaining in the game to push Stillman’s lead to 34-28. The Tigers closed the third quarter up 36-34. The next four minutes remained close with a Collins 3 keeping it a one-point game, 41-40 Loyola. An offensive put back by Sandra Cannady, followed by a Cannady steal and Chelsea Gray basket gave Loyola a five-point lead, which grew to nine points, 49-40, before Williams ended the drought. Loyola’s Taylor Thomas capped the scoring with 34 seconds left.

Collins led all players with 17 points, while Marsha was the second-leading scorer in the game with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Presley Wascom led Loyola with 2 points. 

Stillman (4-12, 4-10 SSAC) will close the regular season Saturday, Feb. 20 with a 3 p.m. game against Loyola.
