Softball Swept by MUW – Stillman College

Softball – Fri, Apr. 2, 2021

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Stillman College softball team wrapped up a 10-game homestand on Friday afternoon, hosting its final non-conference games of the season. The Mississippi University for Women Owls were the opponent, and though the Lady Tigers were able to be competitive for much of the afternoon, they did drop both games.

Stillman (10-22) fell behind in both games early, but they battled to keep the games close. In the end though, it was MUW (11-9) who took the wins, 8-3 and 4-1, avenging a February loss to Stillman.

MUW plated two runs in each of the first two innings of game one, and they tacked on another in the third before Stillman got on the board. In the bottom of the third frame, Quanesha Presley launched a home run to center field to get the Tigers on the board, and Sara Kate Nichols followed with a single before the inning came to an end. Presley’s home run was the first of her collegiate career and the Tigers’ third in as many games.

A single run for MUW in the fifth restored the five run lead, but the Tigers got that run back on an RBI single from Tayla Stowes that made it 6-2. Two more runs in the top of the seventh pushed the MUW lead to 8-2, and while Brooklyn Pennington singled in a run in the bottom of the seventh, that was all the Lady Tigers were able to muster, and the Owls took the win, 8-3.

Kaitlyn Parrish (3-3) earned the win in the circle for MUW, throwing a complete game and yielding three earned runs on 11 hits. Katie Clifton (3-11) took the loss for Stillman, as she allowed five runs on nine hits in four innings.

Eight different Lady Tigers had hits in the game, led by multi-hit efforts from Presley, Nichols, and Stowes. Candace Hampton had a triple in the game, which along with Presley’s homer were the only Stillman extra-base hits in the contest.

An early 3-run homer for the Owls in game two put Stillman in an early hole, but Clifton, Pennington, and Presley Graham combined to allow only one more run the rest of the way. Unfortunately for Stillman, Mackenzie Denton was sharp in the circle for the Owls.

Hampton singled to lead off the bottom of the first for the Lady Tigers, she promptly stole second, and after a bunt single from Taylor Roland moved Hampton to third, she scored when Presley reached on an error to pull Stillman within two runs. The rally, though, stalled out and the Lady Tigers were unable to plate any more runs, falling 4-1.

Denton (5-5) allowed one earned run on six hits in the complete game win, she walked two, and she struck out four. Clifton (3-12) gave up three earned runs in two innings, and she took her second loss of the day.

Hampton had a terrific game for Stillman at the plate in game two, as she notched four of the Lady Tigers’ six hits. Hampton was 4-for-4 with a triple and a run scored, while Roland and Presley each singled in the contest.

Stillman will hit the road for their next four games, all in Southern States Athletic Conference play. Their next games are on Tuesday, April 6 at Faulkner (Ala.) University (17-9, 9-3 SSAC). First pitch of the day’s action is slated for 3 p.m. in Montgomery.
