Softball Announces The Addition Of 11 Signees

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.Kimball Cassady, newly appointed head coach of the Samford Softball program, has announced the addition of 11 signees for the upcoming 2021-22 spring season.
 
“We are excited about the new additions for the upcoming season. Now that we officially have a week of practice under our belt, we see the talent this class will bring to the table,” Cassady said. “They will add a lot of speed which is something I think we will need as we head into the season. We will want to put pressure on our opponent’s defense as much as possible. They also bring some power at the plate which is always exciting. Defensively, they are really adding some competition at their respective position which keeps everyone on their toes and pushes everyone to work hard.”
 
The newly added Bulldogs consist of Sarah Squillace (INF, Woodstock, Ga./Sequoyah HS), Grier Bruce (INF, Kennesaw, Ga./Harrison HS), Katelyn Murphy (OF, Trussville, Ala./Hewitt Trussville HS), Gwynnie Hornibrook (C, Vestavia Hills, Ala./Vestavia Hills HS), Kedzie Howe (OF, Norcross, Ga./Norcross HS), Mary Katherine Tedder (UTL, Hoover, Ala./University of Texas), MacKenzie Newcomb (P, Meridianville, Ala./Hazel Green HS), Logan Champion (C, Marietta, Ga./Lassiter HS), Jordan Walters (UTL, Tallassee, Ala./Shelton State CC), McKayla Cothran (OF, Cumming, Ga./North Forsyth HS), and Jordyn Partain (P, Macon, Ga./FIU).
 
Sarah Squillace joins the Bulldogs from Seqouyah High school where she played softball all four years under Head Coach Lane Whitley. In 2020, Squillace was named to the All-State team while earning Player of the Year and Varsity MVP. The incoming freshman was also a four-time All-County honoree and three-time All-Region team member. She played for the Atlanta Vipers from 2017 to 2019 while finishing out her travel ball career with Georgia Impact from 2019-2020.
 
Infielder Grier Bruce comes to Samford from Kennesaw, Ga. where she attended Harrison High School. Bruce lettered all four years under Head Coach Matthew Jones and was named to First Team All-County, Second Team All-State, and First Team All-Region in 2019. She helped lead her team to a 6A Georgia State Championship in 2018 and a Region Championship in 2022. Bruce closed out her high school career with 411 at bats, 161 hits, 26 doubles, 27 home runs, and 152 RBIs.
 
Kimball Cassady welcomes Katelyn Murphy from Trussville, Ala. where she attended Hewitt-Trussville High School and played softball her sophomore, junior, and senior years. During her time as Husky, Murphy captured a 2019 and 2021 7A State Championship. Murphy also competed for the Birmingham Vipers from 2019-2021.
 
Birmingham native Gwynnie Hornibrook joins the Samford softball team from Vestavia Hills High School where she lettered all four years as a Rebel. Throughout her high school career, Hornibrook made appearances in 164 games, tallying 173 hits, 30 doubles, 20 home runs, and 138 RBIs. As a catcher, she caught a total of 35 runners stealing and recorded eight pickoffs from behind the plate. Hornibrook was also a 2x First Team All-South Metro and 4x All Over The Mountain honoree.
 
Kedzie Howe joins the Bulldogs from Norcross, Ga. where she played softball all four years under coach Ryan Ermers. Howe also competed on various travel ball teams, including, Atlanta Premier Rocco (2018-2019), Georgia Firecrackers Premier (2020), and the Birmingham Vipers (2020-2021). During her time at the high school level, she was 4x Scholar Athlete, Gwinnett County Player of the Month, and was named to First Team All-County her senior year.
 
Transfer Mary Katherine Tedder comes to Samford from the University of Texas where she played for three years under the direction of Head Coach Mike White. The incoming junior saw action in 24 games for the Longhorns during their 2020 Covid shortened season, hitting a .313 clip (5-for-16) with nine runs scored, a double, five walks, and five RBIs. Prior to her time at Texas, Tedder helped lead her travel ball team, the Birmingham Thunderbolts 99, to a third-place finishes at the 2015 and 2016 Premier Girls Fastpitch Nationals.
 
Incoming freshman Mackenzie Newcomb was a four-year letter winner at Hazel Green High School located in Meridianville, Alabama. She was named to the 6A All-State Tournament team (2017-2020), All-Region team (2017-19), and All-State team (2017-2020). Newcomb is the current record holder for most home runs in a season with 14 and for fewest strikeouts in a season with 11. She also helped lead her team to the State Championship appearance in 2017.
 
Logan Champion joins the Samford softball team from Marietta, Ga. where she attended at Lassiter High School. Champion was a four-year starter, earning the title Team MVP in 2019 and Defensive Player of the Year in 2020. She also secured a 6A Georgia State Championship during her senior year. Champion also prepped with the Atlanta Vipers travel ball team from 2018-2021.
 
Transfer pitcher Jordan Walters comes to Samford from Shelton State Community College where she spent one season with the Bucs. She made 20 appearances in the circle, making 18 starts for an overall record of 10-8. Walters pitched a total of 91.2 innings for Shelton State, striking out 51 batters at the plate while registering a 2.75 ERA.
 
Incoming outfielder McKayla Cothran joins the Bulldogs from North Forsyth High School where she was a three-year varsity letter winner. In her final year as a raider, she helped lead her team to an overall record of 31-5. The final addition to the 2021-22 Samford softball team is transfer Jordyn Partain comes to Samford from Mount de Sales Academy in Macon, Ga. where the right-handed pitcher was a member of the varsity softball team for all four years.
