SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference officially announced its 2021-22 men’s basketball league schedule on Thursday, Sept. 9. The SoCon’s 10 men’s basketball teams will all play double-round-robin, 18-game intraleague schedules, totaling 90 league contests. Conference play opens Wednesday, Dec. 29, and wraps Sunday, Feb. 27.
The Samford University Bulldogs will play 14 games at the Pete Hanna Center including five non-conference matchups. The nonconference home slate features Spring Hill, Mississippi College, Belmont, Alabama State and Kennesaw State. The full 2021-22 schedule is available at the link above or by clicking here. Season ticket renewals and sales will begin later this month.
All 10 teams are in action Dec. 29, as new league coaches Desmond Oliver of ETSU, Mike Jones of UNC Greensboro and Justin Gray of Western Carolina make their SoCon debuts. Jones and Gray will share that distinction on the same floor, as the Spartans visit the Catamounts to open league play, while Oliver and the Bucs will visit in-state rival Chattanooga.
New Year’s Day also sees a full SoCon slate, highlighted by defending SoCon regular-season and tournament champion UNCG opening its home slate when it hosts 2020-21 regular-season runner-up Wofford.
The schedule deviates from the usual Wednesday-Saturday format for the first time with two games on Thursday, Jan. 13, as The Citadel hosts UNCG and Mercer welcomes VMI. Three more Thursdays feature a pair of games throughout the season: Jan. 20, Feb. 10 and Feb. 17.
On Jan. 15, Mercer hosts UNCG in the season’s first rematch of last season’s SoCon tournament title game. The squads meet again in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Feb. 13, the first of two Sunday contests for the Spartans this season.
The season’s lone Friday contest pits Western Carolina against VMI in Lexington, Virginia, on Feb. 4.
Eight teams wrap league play on Saturday, Feb. 26, with ETSU visiting UNCG to finish the regular-season slate the following day.
The Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Championship will take place at Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina, from March 4-7.
Full broadcast schedules will be announced later, but all 10 schools’ home games will air on ESPN+ if not selected for national or regional broadcast. Five SoCon games aired on ESPNU last season, representing the most home-originating national broadcasts in league history, while up to five will air on CBS Sports Network this season. The league broadcast schedule will also continue to feature its Ingles SoCon Game of the Week on select Nexstar affiliates throughout the Southeast.
The 101st season of Southern Conference basketball opens Tuesday, Nov. 9.
