Samford Places 109 On Academic All-SoCon Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford placed 109 student-athletes on the Academic All-SoCon team, released by the Southern Conference Wednesday afternoon.

To be eligible for the Academic All-SoCon team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the spring semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.

Samford’s 109 student-athletes on the list, the third-highest total of any SoCon school, averaged a GPA of 3.66. The Samford soccer team led all Bulldog squads with 14 representatives on the team. Women’s outdoor track and field had 13 members on the team, followed by football with 11 and women’s indoor track and field with 10.

This is the first year the SoCon has administered fall and spring sports together, which came as a result of the majority of competition taking place in the spring.

The 1,022 total selections are the second-most for an academic year since the SoCon starting administering the award in 2002-03. Only last year’s total of 1,093 total selections eclipses this season’s total, though participation requirements were relaxed as a result of the cancelation of spring seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
