Softball – Mon, Mar. 22, 2021

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – An extended losing streak is no more. Stillman College defeated Crowley’s Ridge, 2-1, late Monday afternoon after dropping the first game, 9-5, to snap a 13-game losing skid in the month of March.

Stillman captured the win with a complete-game win in the circle by Brooklyn Pennington (1-1), her first career victory. She allowed one run off six hits and a walk and struck out five through seven innings. Pennington also pitched two scoreless, hitless innings of relief in the first game, allowing one walk and recording one strikeout.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Candace Hampton beat out a bunt and stole second to put the Tigers’ tying run in scoring position. With two outs, Quanesha Presley delivered a RBI single to center to tie the game, 1-1.

Both teams recorded a pair of hits in the second through fourth innings. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Tayla Stowest beat out an infield bunt. Hampton then reached safely on a missed catch at first base and moved up to second. Taylor Roland delivered a sac fly to center to score Stowes – the eventual winning run. Hampton was 2-for-3 in the game.

In the top of the sixth, a single by K.J. Jackson, an error and single by Hannah Powell loaded the bases for Crowley’s Ridge with two outs. Pennington struck out Lacey Lambright to leave the bases loaded.

Pennington went on to get a strike out and ground out to first to start the top of the seventh before an error and base hit put two on with two outs. A pop fly to left ended the game, as Hampton camped out and made the play.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Presely singled to left, followed by a Karlee Kincaid single up the middle. Stowes delivered a sac bunt and reached on an error, which scored Presely. A sacrifice squeeze bunt by Hampton played Kincaid and Roland later added a RBI double to right-center to make it 9-3. Roland hit 3-for-4 with two RBI in the game.
