Men’s Basketball Takes Quarterfinals Win Against Panthers

Talladega, AL – The Talladega Men’s Basketball team hosted Philander Smith College yesterday evening in a GCAC Conference Tournament Quarterfinals match-up. After coming off of a final regular season victory against Edward Waters, the Tornadoes entered the tournament as the number three seed.

The Tornadoes struck first on a three-pointer from Phil Winston. Each team was fighting hard early in the first half.

With the clock at 9:55 in the first half, the score sat at 18-3 as the Tornadoes were 15-points ahead of the Panthers.

The Tornadoes continued to find their hot streak and quickly brought their lead to 28-10 while the Panthers struggled to find the net.

A deep three-point shot from Darryl Baker, a layup by Winston, a layup by Jon Warren, and made free-throws from Morris Dunnigan would continue to stretch the Tornadoes lead. A lead they would maintain for the rest of the game.

The Tornadoes entered the second half with a lead of 45-26.

Into the second half a three-point shot from Winston gave the Tornadoes a 23-point cushion against the Panthers 53-30. Philander Smith’s Miquan Martin retaliated with a three of his own, but the Tornadoes remained strong.

Dunnigan would later hit a three-pointer bringing the Tornadoes lead up back up to 23 points 61-38.

In the last five minutes of play, the Tornadoes would continue to pull away up 84-56. The Tornadoes would continue to grow their lead through the last few minutes.

The Tornadoes left with a GCAC Quarterfinals victory 101-70. The Tornadoes were led by Dunnigan with 17 points and boasted six players in double figures.

“It was great to see us dominate the game from start to finish,” said Head Coach Chris Wright. “We defended, rebounded, and executed at a high level. We are starting to play well at the right time of the year.”

The Tornadoes return to action in the GCAC Conference Tournament Semifinals on Saturday, March 7th against the number two seeded Tougaloo College. The Semifinals match-up will be held at Xavier University at 2:00PM.
