NEW ORLEANS – For the second-straight week, University of South Alabama cross country runner Kriami Yego was named the Male Sun Belt Conference Runner of the Week as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

The weekly league honor is the third of Yego’s career as he was also named the Sun Belt’s runner of the week last week as well as last fall on Sept. 17. He is the first South Alabama runner to earn the honor in back-to-back weeks since Micah Triop did so during the 2008 season. Yego’s selection marks the 46th time a Jaguar male runner has earned the honor.

Yego continued his strong start to the 2021 cross country season this past weekend with another top 5 finish at the South Region Preview hosted by North Alabama. With his fourth-place finish at the meet against some of the region’s top teams, Yego – the reigning Sun Belt Conference Male Runner of the Week – has now finished inside the top 3 in five of his six career races at South.

Yego set a new personal best for the second-straight week as his 8k time of 23:47.39 was nearly a minute faster than his previous best in the distance. The time was also the ninth fastest run by a male Jaguar runner in the 8k, eclipsing former South runner Tonny Okello’s time of 23:54 ran at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. (9/29/06).

Led by Yego, South Alabama finished third at the meet as a team.

The South Alabama men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to action next weekend when they compete at the Live in Lou meet hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission at EP Tom Sawyer Park. The start times of both races are still to be determined.
