Bulldogs To Welcome LSU, Troy To Samford Invite

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Bulldogs (1-8, 0-0 SoCon) of Samford University will host the annual Samford Invitational Tournament Friday, Sept. 17 through Sunday, Sept. 19 at the Pete Hanna Center. The three-day event features the Bulldogs, Louisiana State (3-4) and Troy (5-4) with one match planned per day. Samford faces LSU on Friday at 7 PM to jump-start the event. LSU and Troy will face-off on Saturday at 4 PM followed by Samford versus Troy on Sunday at 3 PM. All three matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Samford is playing just its second home match of the 2021 campaign after falling 3-0 to Kennesaw State on Tuesday at the Pete Hanna Center. Kayla McQuirter led the Bulldogs offensively with 13 kills, with Lauren Deaton and Sarah Hayes Farley adding 12 and 10 respectively. Kate Morgan had 10 digs on the night for Samford defensively.

  • Louisiana State
    • LSU leads the all-time series with Samford 1-0 after defeating the Bulldogs 3-1 on Sept. 13, 2014 in Tallahassee, Fla.
  • Troy
    • Samford is 4-1 against the Trojans in their last five meetings including a  3-0 victory at the Pete Hanna Center on Aug. 26, 2011 in the last meeting between the clubs.


  • Kayla Keshock, a 6-1 setter, has become a mainstay in the lineup for Samford, starting eight of the Bulldogs’ nine matches this year. The Mobile, Ala., native, has recorded 277 assists through nine matches, including a season-high 46 assists in a 3-1 victory over UT-Martin. In 15 appearances as a freshman in the spring, Keshock totaled 312 assists and turned in a career best 51 against Chattanooga.
  • Lauren Deaton, a 5-11 senior outside hitter from Memphis, Tenn., has 1,286 career kills in her Samford career. The school record is 1,639. She also has 3,683 total attempts and the school record is 4,107.
  • Emily Naubert, a 5-11 junior from Chicago, Ill., enters the week with 846 digs including 81 this season. Naubert has turned in double-digit digs in three games including a season-high 13 versus North Carolina A&T.
  • Kate Morgan, a 5-10 freshman and defensive specialist from Waxahachie, Texas, is second on the club 78 digs including a career-high 23 versus Ole Miss.


  • Louisiana State enters this weekend’s event with a 3-4 overall record after going 1-1 at the Rice Invitational. The Tigers fell to the Owls 3-0 in the opener, but rallied to defeat Sam Houston State 3-1 in the finale.
  • Kylie Kuyava-Deberg leads the Tigers in kills with 118, averaging 4.5 per set while Karli Rose is the team leader in assists with 125 (9.6/set). 
  • Troy went 3-1 last week to improve to 5-4 on the year. The Trojans claimed victories over Virginia Tech (3-1), Chattanooga (3-1) and Alabama State (3-1) at the UTC Classic.
  • The Trojans are paced by Julia Brooks with 101 kills through nine matches.
