Bulldogs Head To Bowling Green For Western Kentucky Invite

Game Notes (WKU Invite)


 – The Samford volleyball team turns their road swing to the north heading to Bowling Green, Ky. for the Holiday Inn University-Plaza Invitational hosted by Western Kentucky, Friday and Saturday.

Ole Miss and UT Martin will join the Bulldogs at Western Kentucky for a round-robin style tournament. The Bulldogs (0-5) have played a difficult nonconference schedule including power-five competition Clemson and Florida State. The Bulldogs head to Bowling Green after a weekend in Tallahassee where the Dogs fell in three closely-contested matches. Redshirt-sophomore Kenya McQuirter had back-to-back matches in Tallahassee with double-digit kills to pace the Samford offense, while Emily Naubert recorded 29 digs throughout the weekend.

  • Western Kentucky
    • The Bulldogs and Hilltoppers have faced off once before, with Western Kentucky coming out on top in a straight-sets victory September 21, 2019. Deaton had 13 kills and four digs in the matchup in Bowling Green, Ky.
  • UT Martin
    • Friday’s matchup will be the first between the Bulldogs and Skyhawks in program history.
  •  Ole Miss
    • Samford and Ole Miss are the more familiar foes at the WKU Invite having played four times since 2010 with the Rebels holding a commanding 4-0 lead in the series history.


  • McQuirter notched double-digit kills in the first two matches of the FSU Invite with 14 against VCU and 10 against the Seminoles, tallying 28 in total on the weekend.
  • Seniors Lauren Deaton and Briana Holmes saw their first action of the season in Tallahassee, with Deaton recording four kills in two matches while Holmes logged 11 kills and 5 digs in nine set
  • Naubert had nine digs in each of the Dogs first two matches at FSU, and 11 in the final match against Tulane to lead the Samford defense, while also recording seven service aces.


  • Western Kentucky boasts an undefeated 6-0 record coming into their home tournament, having downed #25 Notre Dame in straight sets on the road. Senior Lauren Matthews, is nearing the century mark for kills this season with 94, fifth-year senior, Logan Kael has paced the Hilltoppers defensively tallying 70 digs.
  • The Skyhawks of the Ohio Valley Conference have started out the season 1-5 under head coach Jaclynn Wilson in her seventh season in Martin, Tenn. Senior Karen Scanlon leads the Skyhaws with 54 kills and 18 blocks.
  • Ole Miss makes the trek to Bowling Green with their undefeated (5-0) record in tow. The Rebels are led offensively by sophomore right side Samantha Schnitta who has racked up 48 kills on the young season.
