Bulldogs Drop Home Opener Versus Kennesaw State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University volleyball team fell, 3-0, in their midweek home opener against Kennesaw State, Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  
 
Eight matches into the 2021 season and the Bulldogs finally had a chance to host their regular season home opener against the Owls of Kennesaw State,. KSU was on the front foot early, opening an 11-6 advantage forcing head coach Keylor Chan to use an early timeout to stay the momentum. After the timeout the Bulldogs exploded for a 5-0 run with senior middle blocker, Briana Holmes, tying the set at 11-11 with a slide attack. The sides continued to exchange points until Kennesaw was able to take the closely contested set 26-24.
 
As fans continued to file in the Pete Hanna Center the Bulldogs found their stride in the second frame going on a seven-point run to hold a 7-2 lead, but the Owls battled back to tie the set at 13 apiece. The seesaw continued with both matching mini-run for mini-run until Kennesaw opened a 23-19 advantage. Samford continued to battle with a timely block from Holmes and Sarah Hayes Farley, but ultimately the Owls took the set 25-22.
 
In the third set the Bulldogs struggled to find momentum in the early going. Kennesaw jumped out to a 11-6 advantage until the Bulldogs had a four-point run forcing the Owls to call a timeout with the lead dwindling to one. Kenya McQuirter’s 12th kill of the night tied the must-win set at 13-13. The Owls responded with a three-point run of their own and the Bulldogs called their final timeout of the set. The Bulldogs pulled back even with a three-point run, but the Owls closed the match on a 4-0 run to take the match in straight sets.

FROM THE BOX SCORE

  • McQuirter led the Bulldogs offensively with 13 kills, with Deaton and Farley adding 12 and 10 respectively.
  • Kate Morgan had 10 digs on the night for Samford defensively.
  • Kennesaw State was led by Emma Schurfranz (15 kills) and Dani Ballou (13 kills) who both had double-digit kills in the Owls straight set win.

UP NEXT

  • The Bulldogs are set to host Louisiana State and Troy in Birmingham for the Samford Invite September 17-19. Samford will open the tournament against LSU on Friday, September 17 at 7 PM in the Pete Hanna Center.
