JAGUARS’ GONCALVES NAMED CoSIDA FIRST-TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama men’s basketball player Kayo Goncalves was named first-team academic all-district by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.

The graduate transfer forward from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was recognized after ranking among the national leaders in multiple three-point field-goal statistical categories his first season with the Jaguars.

He ended the 2020-21 campaign averaging 9.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per outing, hitting 81-of-212 attempts from beyond the three-point arc to finish third in the Sun Belt Conference in three-pointers per game and fifth in three-point field-goal percentage; in addition to concluding the season 15th in the country in total threes made, Goncalves was among the top 25 in three-point field goals per contest as well.  He scored 10 or more points 12 times on the year and was only player on team with two double-doubles while helping South to a 17-11 finish.

An honorable mention all-Great American Conference at Southeastern Oklahoma State the previous season, Goncalves paced the league and ranked fourth nationally in three-point field-goal percentage his final year at the school.  In 90 career games at the NCAA Division I and II levels, he has recorded averages of 9.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game and has made 40.9 percent from beyond the arc while sinking 218 field goals from long distance.

Goncalves is set to receive his master’s of business administration degree as part of the University’s graduation ceremonies this week.

In order to be considered for honors individuals must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher, be a starter or important reserve, and must have sophomore status both academically and athletically.  After making the all-district team — which includes schools located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina — Goncalves is now a candidate for the NCAA Division I Academic All-America that will be announced the final week of May.
