NEW ORLEANS – After setting a new personal best and picking up his second individual title on Friday, University of South Alabama cross country runner Kriami Yego was named the Male Sun Belt Conference Runner of the Week as announced by the league office on Wednesday.

The weekly league honor is the second of Yego’s career as he was also named the Sun Belt’s runner of the week last fall on Sept. 17. Yego’s selection marks the 45th time a Jaguar male runner has earned the honor.

In his first cross country race of the fall, Yego set a new personal best in the 5k at the Azalea City Classic with a time of 15:18.2 to take home the individual title crossing the line 22 seconds faster than the next runner. It was the second straight season that Yego had won the meet marking the fourth straight year a South Alabama male runner has paced the field – the seventh time in the last nine Azalea City Classics. With the win, Yego has placed inside the top 3 in four of his five career races, never finishing lower than 12th.

As a team, South Alabama won the meet title with 15 points as the Jags captured the top six spots and all seven runners competing finished ninth or better. With the team title, the Jaguars have taken home top honors at their home meet in seven of the last nine runnings of the event.

The South Alabama men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete this weekend at the South Region Preview hosted by the University of North Alabama. The men’s 8k is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 a.m. (CT), while the women’s 5k will follow at 8:15 a.m. (CT) at the John Hunt Cross Country Running Park in Huntsville, Ala.
