MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama cross country teams are scheduled to compete in four meets within the state – a pair of home meets – including the Sun Belt Conference Championship for the second-straight year in the schedule released on Wednesday.

South will open up the season on its home course when it hosts the Azalea City Classic on Fri., Sept. 10 at the Old Brookley Gulf Pines Golf Course on Mobile Bay.

A week later, both Jag squads travel to Huntsville, Ala., to compete in the South Region Preview hosted by North Alabama at McFarland Park on Fri., Sept.17, which also serves as the course for this fall’s NCAA South Regional site.

“I am very excited about the schedule this fall,” South Alabama cross country head coach Parker Cowles said. “I am looking forward to our trips to Huntsville.  I have not seen the course, but the high school meets that have been there have run very quickly; almost like a track race.  I think that suits our team, so it will be good to preview in September so we can prepare to race well there in November.”

Following a two-week break from competition, South will make its first trip out of state to open the month of October, one of three months scheduled during the month, when it participates in the Live in Lou Classic hosted by Louisville at EP Tom Sawyer State Park (Oct. 2).

The final regular-season meet sees the Jaguars head to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete in the FSU XC Invite/Pre-Nationals held at Apalachee Regional Park on Oct. 15. The Seminoles’ home course will also serve as the site for the NCAA National Championships on Nov. 20.

“It is great to have a course we are very familiar with in Tallahassee be the national host,” Cowles noted. “Pre-Nationals is always a great meet and with Florida State as host, it means we have an easy trip and get a great meet experience leading into the conference championship.”

For the second-straight year and the sixth time overall, South Alabama will open postseason competition and serve as hosts for the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Championships on Oct. 29 held at the Old Brookley Gulf Pines Golf Course.

“It is great to host the SBC meet again.  We know the course well, we execute on our home course very well,” Cowles said. “It is a terrific venue and I love having the meet here in Mobile.

At the 2020 league championship meet, the Jaguar men placed five runners inside the top 11 spots to pick up the program’s ninth Sun Belt title, while Carolien Milleanaar became the fourth female to win individual honors as she crossed the line with a personal-best time of 17:12.6, five seconds faster than the next closest runner.
