UM falls late in game three at AUM, 8-3

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team lost the rubber match of this weekend’s Gulf South Conference series at Auburn University at Montgomery on Monday afternoon, 8-3. The Falcons now hold a 12-21 mark overall and a 9-21 record in GSC play after dropping two of three to the Warhawks this weekend.
UM opened the game’s scoring in the top of the second inning. Asa Awbrey led the inning off with a double down the right field line. He was then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Langford, and brought home on a ground out to shortstop by Brennan Ferguson to make it a 1-0 game.
Langford picked up an RBI of his own on a single to right field that sent Ben Teel across home plate in the top of the sixth inning. Ferguson then got his second RBI of the contest in the next at-bat with a double down the left field line that allowed Langford to score and made it a 3-0 game.
UM had only allowed one hit in the first five innings of the game, but AUM got the bats going in the home half of the sixth and scored three runs to tie the game.
Montevallo went three up, three down in the both the top of the seventh and eighth innings. The Warhawks put the game on ice in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a grand slam and a solo homer that gave them an 8-3 advantage.
Reed Latimer doubled in the top of the ninth with two outs to give the Falcons a baserunner, but he would be stranded there.
Greg Dunham got the start on the mound for UM and allowed one earned run and two hits while striking out four in his 5.1 innings of work. Latimer, who hit 2-for-4, was the only Falcon to have a multi-hit game.
UP NEXT: The Falcons will host GSC foe Shorter University in their last regular season series of the year beginning on Friday, April 30 at 5 p.m.
